Sunfish Angler Education Fishing Activities

Sunfish is proud of the work its member organisations and regional branches do to encourage young people to get involved in recreational fishing. Many individual clubs also encourage and cater for juniors. The three main activities carried out by Sunfish as centrally organised events are Angler Instructor Courses, Lifestyle Kids Fishing Days and the annual Take a Kid Fishing Day.

Sunfish Angler Instructor Courses
Sunfish has a Director of Angler Education (Keith Latimer), who takes overall responsibility for the contents of our Angler Instructor Courses. Keith is helped in this task by several others. Courses are held about every two years and they attract participants from throughout Queensland. Successful participants receive formal certification at various levels. They are equipped with all the necessary information on the Sunfish operational framework and legislative obligations for holding local activities for juniors and other target groups.

Lifestyle Kids Fishing Day
Each year Sunfish coordinates about 35 of these activities throughout the State. Limited funding is available to assist with each event. The Coordinator is John Crone who is responsible for overall supervision of this important Sunfish programme.

Take a Kid Fishing Day
This is a special annual event. All sunfish members and regional branches are encouraged to participate. It is held on a specific day (Sunday 25 March in 2012). However there is flexibility if this date does not suit in a particular area. John Crone is also the coordinator for these activities.

Sunfish educational displays at boat and tackle shows
Sunfish is able to provide displays and stands, manned by Sunfish representatives, at some of the larger shows. Recently Sunfish was involved at the Brisbane Boat Show, the Tinnie and Tackle Show, Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival and the Townsville Boat and Camping Expo.
Participation by Sunfish provides an excellent opportunity for Sunfish representatives to talk to many recreational fishers who are not directly affiliated with Sunfish and its member organisations. Recently many such people have joined Sunfish at these shows, paying a membership fee.
FFSAQ also does a great job at these shows in providing a particular focus and advice on freshwater fishing.
